Dear Friends,
Doris Hanson, Director,
A Shield and Refuge Ministry

My good friend and former Mormon, Kathleen Melanokas has written an excellent book that reveals more historical evidence of questionable and highly illegal activities during the formation of the Mormon Church.  The Bible tells us that only one foundation can be laid, and that foundation is Jesus Christ.  Jesus told us that if a house is built on the sand instead of the rock, when the storms come the house built on the sand will fall with a great big crash.

The more information that comes out about historical Mormonism, and Joseph Smith who is their foundation, the more we realize that Mormonism cannot prevail, because it is not built on the solid foundation of truth.  We cannot trust a church, or a self-made prophet who lied and cheated his way through life, nor works, polygamy, or anything or anyone else to be our guide to heaven.

Jesus alone is the Way: John 14:6. The Name of Jesus alone is given for us to be saved, Acts 4:12. Grace alone is provided through faith as our means to salvation, Ephesians 2:8-9.

This is a great and informative new  book for those who are interested in this topic.

FROM OUR MAIL BOX (and FACEBOOK):

I am neither Mormon, polygamist or (until recently) Christian. I found your YouTube site during some research I was doing on abusive and controlling people.  I could write for hours about how you and your guests healed me and opened my mind and heart. You have inspired and invigorated me and I want to share a deep thank you.  My life has been a long and winding search for God. I did fall for some false teachings but God kept speaking to me. In the past three years I have had a growing relationship with Christ and have begun to wear a cross but was still wary of the bible and would not have ever identified as Christian.

The particular awakening from Mormonism to Christianity that you and your guests have shared brought me the rest of the way to Christ. The differences you elucidate were essential to my understanding. Many in the secular world hold the same misconceptions that Mormons hold, .... However, they are in fact entirely false and misleading.

Because of your consistency and passion I was able to let God's love all the way in. Seeing and understanding your devotion and the true meaning of His death gave me permission to finally allow forgiveness for my sins so that I can stand with Christ. Before I watched your show I had a relationship, but Christ was far away from me. Now he is with me. I do not need to do anything to earn his love. As I allow his Grace and am faithful to him I am happy.

I found your site a couple weeks ago and in that time have watched about two thirds of all of your shows, so you have been very present with me during a remarkable transformation even though you have never met me and would never have known of me without this email.

You are inspiring me to speak and live my truth.... and I wanted to speak up and thank you.    In Appreciation.   J.

POLYGAMY IN THE NEWS

The feds have filed another case against Phaze Concrete, an FLDS owned company, for violating child labor laws.  They allege they used teen-agers and worked them long hours for little pay under dangerous conditions.  Two former FLDS teens said in court documents they were pulled out of school to work for the company when they were 12 and 14 years old.

It is normal in polygamy groups to hand over to the group an earned paycheck which many Phaze employees did.  The leaders use the money to pay themselves, buy luxuries or help fund legal fees.

Paragon Contractors is another FLDS company that used child labor to work long hard unpaid hours harvesting pecans.  A judge found them guilty as charged.

On September 12th the Sister Wives of the reality TV show, filed a petition with the United States Supreme Court in their ongoing quest to legalize polygamy.  The Tenth Court of Appeals had thrown out their constitutional challenge against Utah’s Anti-bigamy laws making way for their petition to the Supreme Court.  The last time polygamy was heard before the high court was in 1879 in the Reynolds vs. United States which upheld that polygamy was not a constitutional right.

One news source said that no more than 1% of the 7,500 cases that are appealed annually are ever heard, and that they would be wise to refuse to hear the case, especially since they’ve already ruled on same sex marriage which effectively redefined marriage.

As Christians, let us pray for God’s grace and mercy regarding this new attack against His design of marriage being not only a man and a woman, but between ONE man and ONE woman.

Is Polygamy Biblical?
(Excerpts from the book)

David left the kingdom of Israel to his son Solomon.  Solomon was the wisest man who ever lived.

1 Kings 10:23-24   King Solomon was greater in riches and wisdom than all the other kings of the earth.  The whole world sought audience with Solomon to hear the wisdom God had put in his heart.

1 Kings 11:1-11   “King Solomon, however, loved many foreign women besides Pharaoh's daughter-Moabites, Ammonites, Edomites, Sidonians and Hittites. They were from nations about which the LORD had told the Israelites, "You must not intermarry with them, because they will surely turn your hearts after their gods."
Nevertheless, Solomon held fast to them in love. He had seven hundred wives of royal birth and three hundred concubines, and his wives led him astray. As Solomon grew old, his wives turned his heart after other gods, and his heart was not fully devoted to the LORD his God, as the heart of David his father had been. He followed Ashtoreth the goddess of the Sidonians, and Molech the detestable god of the Ammonites. So Solomon did evil in the eyes of the LORD; he did not follow the LORD completely, as David his father had done.  On a hill east of Jerusalem, Solomon built a high place for Chemosh the detestable god of Moab, and for Molech the detestable god of the Ammonites. He did the same for all his foreign wives, who burned incense and offered sacrifices to their gods.  The LORD became angry with Solomon because his heart had turned away from the LORD, the God of Israel, who had appeared to him twice. Although he had forbidden Solomon to follow other gods, Solomon did not keep the LORD's command.”

Despite all of Solomon’s wisdom, his multiple wives were his downfall.   It should be noted that not all the women in a harem were necessarily sexual partners.  Women were often used as property to be traded back and forth between kings and despots to confirm and guarantee covenants of peace between nations.  This  abuse and misuse of women was something God never intended nor planned for men to do or for women to endure.

Tidbits from MORMON POLYGAMY HISTORY

“From my knowledge of the spiritual wife system I should think that the number of secret women in Nauvoo cannot be much less than six hundred. There are many married, as well as single women in this number; and so slyly do they carry on their operations, that the husbands of many have never mistrusted the fact. Occasionally, a matter of this kind was detected, that opened the eyes of a few persons; and so conspicuous were things made to appear the early part of this spring, that every man in the city, who was not so blinded by fanaticism as to doubt the evidence of his own senses, could have seen what damnable iniquity was practiced. In consequence of the discoveries then made by the two Laws, Dr. Foster and others and the exposure that followed, many of the most intelligent and respectable of the church dissented, denounced Joe as a fallen prophet, and formed a new society. But to return to my conversation with Hyrum.

After giving me his experience in the spiritual wife system, he urged me to take a few women, and named two or three whom he said would suit me. I thanked him, and said I had no desire to form any connection with any women in the city, but if I should change my mind I would give his choice the preference, in part. As we returned to the store, we met Dr. Richards, and Hyrum said to him that he would prophecy on my head that I would soon come into the church, and become as great a man as ever Paul was. To this I made but little reply, and left them together. I went down to Joe's house, and on entering, I found Joe in conversation with Emma, who was weeping bitterly. I asked Joe if he was engaged. He replied by telling me to walk into his council room, and he would be there presently. I accordingly went in, and found Porter Rockwell sweeping the room. After I took my seat, Rockwell remarked that there was trouble in the camp. Said I, "yes, and it appears to be of a serious nature." Presently Joe entered and took his seat beside me. He appeared vexed with Emma, because she opposed him in his plans against Law. He said she was mad because she could not get Law for a spiritual husband, and that he would be obliged to turn off [sic - out?] his spiritual wives, that he kept about the house.

Accordingly, in a few days Joe broke up house keeping and Ebenezer Robinson took the house. Joe and all his family boarded with him; and thus ten or twelve poor females whom he had duped, and some of whom really thought, that they had had the Holy Ghost for a bed-fellow, were turned out of house and home to shift for themselves. Joe's reason as given to the people, for thus breaking up housekeeping, was that he had too much business, and had not time sufficient to attend to both household concerns and the affairs of the church.

FOR YOUR PRAYERS...
  • That our message of the cross will no longer seem foolish to those who are depending upon polygamy to do for them what Jesus has already done.

  • Continue to Pray for a mother with 3 children who has left our care and is now on her own.

  • Pray always for the ideal location for our hagar home.

  • Pray for offers of invitation to speak to more and more groups to  explain our ministry and the heartbreak of Mormon polygamy as it is lived out in the Intermountain West.

  • Pray for more and more people to leave polygamy and contact us for the help they need, and that they will hear and believe the biblical truth, that polygamy is not a requirement from god nor an essential to go to heaven, that they’ll believe what Jesus said when He taught there are no marriages in heaven, no eternal polygamy.
